Help in your Bereavement

Posted on September 29th, 2025

Losing a loved one can be devastating and often feels like the end of the world. You may feel that there is no point in going on, or that no one else could possibly experience what you are going through. These are natural reactions and not a sign that you are ‘going mad’. Family and friends might appear to avoid you, this is usually because they don’t know what to say or do. It may be up to you to let them know that you need to talk and have their support.   These confusing feelings are often felt for a few months or longer in some situations after the death and may be followed by periods of sadness and depression.

Sharing with a good listener can make all the difference.

We all try to avoid painful things, and it is sometimes tempting to feel that it would be more bearable if you moved house or quickly disposed of possessions.

Don’t make any major changes while you are still grieving. Give yourself lots of time to think about such things, and discuss your plans with others.

Grieving takes time, but gradually you will find that you can remember without becoming distressed.

People vary a lot in how long this takes. We are all individuals and react differently, but eventually you will be able to start rebuilding your life again.

SOME SUGGESTIONS:-

Don’t hide your feelings.

Try to express them as much as possible and talk to someone you trust. Don’t neglect yourself, try to eat well and get plenty of rest.

Do contact your doctor if you feel unwell. Don’t hurry to overcome your grief. Do keep in touch with friends and family. Don’t enter into any financial or legal arrangements unless you fully understand it and don’t let others rush you into anything before you are ready.

Do remember that using drugs, alcohol and smoking may help in the short term, but will not ultimately ease the pain of grief. Do begin to make longer term plans for the future so that you can have something to look forward to.
